As a requirement set by GBI green building standards, the construction of Penang Hill's new funicular train upper station needed a solution provider to green up the metal deck roofing, and while doing that, use recognized herb species for at least a portion of the green roof. Additionally, the green roof is required to skirt around an existing design of PV cells on the roof.
Here's where Belalang raised our hands, pulled up our sleeves and got to work.
It was an interesting experience for team Belalang to be daily commuters of the 100+ year old funicular train service during the 1-2 week installation period. This project also posed logistical issues of transporting our Gaiamat materials and plants up the hill via an old road first built by the colonial British. Facing a limited window to transport and plant the mats to limit damage/transport shock to the plants, the team had to work late nights in cold and rainy conditions. By using the low-maintenance GaiaMat extensive green roofing solution, we also ensured that local flora can take root and enrich the biodiversity of the green roof, while also requiring fewer maintenance visits for upkeep.
